Beijing International Film Festival’s Signing Projects Land
Wolf Totem, an upcoming Chinese drama film whose production deal was signed in the 3rd Beijing International Film Festival, is scheduled to get a national release in China on February 19th. Thanks to the productive role played by BJIFF, several films’ production deals have been signed in the platform in 2015.
In recent years, an increasing number of co-productions have appeared in the Chinese film market as Chinese filmmakers are turning their eyes to Sino-foreign cooperation. The movie Wolf Totem, produced by China Film Group Corporation, Beijing Forbidden City Film Corporation and Reperage (France) Corporation, and directed by French director Jean-Jacques Annaud, will have its special premiere on Valentine’s Day. It is slated for release nationwide on February 19th.
The Chinese semi-auto biographical novel Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong is based on the author’s 11 years’ experience in the steppes of Inner Mongolia where he was sent down at the height of the Cultural Revolution. As an environmental-protection-themed novel about the relationship between man and nature, man and animal, it is the only novel in the world whose narrative focus is on wolves. The novel has been translated into over 30 languages and exhibited good sales in more than 70 countries. Lauded as the best director in portraying animals, Jean-Jacques Annaud, an Oscar-winning director, once said: “Only I can make Wolf Totem into a film, a good film.”
In fact, the film Wolf Totem has strong ties to Beijing International Film Festival. The signing ceremony of its production deal was held in the Sino-Foreign Co-production Forum of the 3rd BJIFF in 2013. As another proof of the genuine bond, Wolf Totem revisited the BJIFF in 2014, and the director Jean-Jacques Annaud walked the Red Carpet for the Opening Ceremony and attended the Creativity Forum.
