The 1st Beijing International Film Festival
Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) is a large-sized film activity sponsored by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, and undertaken by the Film Bureau of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (Beijing Municipal Bureau of Copyright). It has been successfully held four times since the inception in 2011. BJIFF takes “Share the Screen, Shape the Future” as the keynote, aims at internationalization, professionalization, innovation & high-end, and marketization, and strives to build up a platform for promoting the Chinese film career and industry development and enhance the Sino-overseas film exchange, transaction and cooperation. It is fully embodying the feature of benefiting the people with culture, and trying to forge a world culture exchange brand featuring “International level, Chinese characteristics and Beijing style”.
With four years of development, BJIFF has undergone the procedure of high-end kickoff, leapfrog improvement, and hitch with the international market. It has explored and developed such exclusive orientations and styles as “Master, Mass, Market”. It has been comprehensively improving the festival quality, attracting thousands of professional institutions, more than 10,000 guests and millions of audiences.
BJIFF has successively invited Nikita Mikhalkov and John Woo as the international jury president of Tiantan Award. Together with Cameron Bailey, Philippe Muyl, Kang Je-gyu, Gu Changwei, and Lu Chuan, etc., they selected such excellent films as The Grandmaster, Attila Marcel, and Hope. The festival has screened more than 1,100 excellent Chinese and foreign films for accumulated 2200 times to the audiences in Beijing and the surrounding areas, as well as hosted 13 theme forums targeting at the film industry’s hot issues and topics. It has invited more than 80 worldwide well-known filmmakers such as Luc Besson, James Cameron, Mark Mueller, Oliver Stone, Jean-Jacques Annaud, Peter Chan, Jean Reno, Keanu Reeves, Han Sanping, and Paul Hanneman to share their experience. The Film Market has attracted nearly 10,000 professionals from some 2600 film companies and institutions, with the signed projects covering all links of the whole industrial chain and inking an accumulated value of about 27.319 billion yuan. It has become the No. 1 film market in China. Nearly 5000 journalists from 300 plus media both at home and abroad have launched in-depth reporting on BJIFF.
Brief Introduction of the 5th BJIFF
The 5th BJIFF is sponsored by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, and undertaken by the Film Bureau of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (Beijing Municipal Bureau of Copyright), and Huairou District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality. It will be held from April 16th to 23rd, 2015, and consist of seven major sections including Tiantan Award selection, Opening Ceremony, Beijing Film Panorama, Theme Forum, Beijing Film Market, Film Carnival, Closing & Awards Ceremony, as well as New Focus, Forward Future Unit, the Classical Peking Opera Film Section, and Film Musical Concert, etc.
BJIFF will arrange activities by closely surrounding the orientation of “Master, Mass, Market”, and highlighting its own characteristics. Strive to build the Festival into the No. 1 film festival in Asia and keep abreast with the world’s top 3 film festivals in three to five years.
The Competition Section “Tiantan Award” will solicit the excellent films presented after January 1, 2014 worldwide, in a bid to pool the most internationalized and professional film masterpieces. The international jury headed by the well-known French director Luc Besson, Fyodor Bondarchuk, Peter Chan, Robert Mark Kamen, Ki-duK Kim, Fernando Meirelles, Zhou Xun are the members of the international jury。 They will put forward the ten awards with international credibility and influence through fair, justified, scientific and precise evaluation procedures.
The Opening Ceremony will be held in International Convention & Exhibition Center Yanqi Lake Beijing. It will make full use of the post-APEC resources, embody the film elements, and highlight the sense of ritual. The jury members will give speeches to recommend the candidates of the Tiantan Award.
Beijing Film Panorama will select 360 outstanding films worldwide with multiple subjects, genres and nationalities, which will be screened in 20 plus cinemas, academic institutions and 8 universities in Beijing. It will also make full use of the communication advantages of new media by opening the screening pages in such video websites as the film festival’s official website, microblog, WeChat, Tencent, YOUKU, iQIYI, and Sohu, so as to stimulate the audiences’ enthusiasm of seeing the films.
The Theme Forum consists of Sino-Foreign Film Co-production Forum, International Film Group Summit Forum, and Summit on the Beauty of Film, which will invite internationally well-known directors, producers, editors, and film industry leaders as the guest speakers to participate in theme speeches and discussions.
Beijing Film Market will center on the theme of “demonstration, recommendation, transaction and exchange”, continue to pay attention to the film factors and project pitches, and build up two major transaction platforms. It will carry out Exhibitions, Project Pitches, Industry Conversations, Market Screenings, and Contract Signing Ceremony, in a bid to make breakthroughs in signing projects and contract values.
The Film Carnival will hold large-sized mass film theme cultural activities in the film festival’s theme cinemas in Huairou District and the city which will strive to realize the widest mass participation and most practical cultural sharing.
The Closing & Awards Ceremony will announce the achievements of the film festival, unveil and confer awards to all Tiantan Award winners.
The Forward Future Unit aims to encourage newcomers, new works and new ideas by putting forward the Most Popular Film, the Most Popular Director, and the Most Popular Screenwriter. The Documentary Sector will present the excellent Chinese and foreign documentaries both online and offline through designating cinemas, salon activities, Beijing TV Station (BTV) Documentary Channel, new media websites and mobile media. The Micro Film will screen dramas, documentaries, public-service videos, and advertisements, etc., in a bid to encourage and guide the active and healthy online cultural creations. The New Focus will make use of the state-level professional film all-media platform of the Film Channel to find, recommend and support those outstanding young film talents with market potentials. The Film Musical Concert will demonstrate the Chinese and foreign classical films and audio-visual feasts with wonderful rhythms, which will focus on displaying the endless charm of the film art and guiding the audiences to review the eternal rhythms.
