1. The Composer
It’s the opening film for the 9th BJIFF, directed by Xierzati Yahefu and co-starred by Hu Jun, Yuan Quan and Berik Aitzhanov. The film tells the story about Xian Xinghai, the people's musician, who came to Almaty during the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union. As a stranger in the land suffering from poverty and illness, he was rescued and supported by the famous Kazakh musician Bakhitzhan Baikadamov and his family. In the last years of Xian’s life, he never forgot his original enthusiasm despite all the hardships. His heart was tied to his motherland and he inspired the people of Chinese and Kazakhstan to fight against fascism with his music.
Highlight: The true life of Xian Xinghai is adapted into a movie by the outstanding performance of skilled actor Hu Jun and actress Yuan Quan.
2. Zero
It’s the closing film for the 9th BJIFF, directed by Aanand L. Rai and co-starred by Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. The film tells the story about Bowa Singh, a dwarf but born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He meets and falls in love with Aphaia, a female rocket designer who is physically disabled. But after they decide on the wedding date, Bowa chooses to escape. A year later, he finds that he still loves Aphaia, and travels to the United States to ask for her forgiveness.
Highlight: It discusses what the true love is and is filled with humanism ies and positive energy.
3. The Job
The film is an important work of the famous Italian director Ermanno Olmi to establish his personal style. The story tells the story about a 15-year-old country boy who goes to a big company in Milan for a job. After going through a multitude of tests, both he and a girl who is also looking for a job get the jobs.
Highlight: The film displays the hardships of Italian social life in a simple and unpretentious way.
4.The Masquerade Hotel
The film is adapted from The Masquerade Hotel, a novel of Higashino Keigo, with the same name, directed by Masayuki Suzuki, written by Michinao Okada, starred byKimura Takuya and Nagasawa Masami. The film tells the story that in order to arrest the serial killer, Nitta Kousuke, a criminal police, disguises himself as a waiter to get into the hotel and teams up with Yamagishi Naomi, the hotel receptionist, to find out the killer.
Highlight: The popular Japanese actor Kimura Takuya and actress Nagasawa Masami co-star in the film.
5. Macbeth
The film is the original on-site screening version at theNational Theatre Live, directed by the art director Rufus Norris, who restarted to direct Shakespeare's drama after 25 years, and starred by Rory Kinnear, the winner of Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor, and Anne-Marie Duff. The ambitious General Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. In order to keep the secret of murder and consolidate his power, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth continue cruel slaughter. Finally, the fear and suspicions wiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death.
Highlight: The film empowers the most famous tragedy of Shakespeare with the modern Gothic style.
6 Non-Fiction
It is another cooperation of Olivier Assayas and Juliette Binoche after Clouds of Sils Maria, and co-starred by Guillaume Canet and Vincent Macaigne. The film tells the story about two Parisian couples in the publishing industry, who are affected by the digital technology innovation in their life, work and emotions.
Highlight: It was nominated for the Competition Section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival and well received.
7 The Grandmaster 2D
It is a recent directing film of Wong Kar-Wai, starred byTony Leung, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Song Hye-kyo ,Wang Qingxiang and Max Zhang
Highlight: After the re-screening of the 3D version, the 2D film will present the original spirit of kongfu in Wong Kar-Wai style.
8 Hitchcock
It’s the name of Sir Alfred Hitchcock, representing five films to be screened at BJIFF, including Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Rear Window, and The Birds. All of them are the important films in the film history. You can not miss even one of them.
