On August 27, Industry Conversation: Young Directors' Rise to Power will welcome back representative excellent filmmakers who participated in the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) Project Pitches, including directors Larry Yang, Tian Li, Yu Qing, Gu Xiaogang and Xu Lei, to share their stories and experience, showcase the outcomes of the Project Pitches, probe into its significance, and motivate more young filmmakers to stay true to their original aspiration, create films in China and explore new possibilities of Chinese films.
As the BJIFF enters its 10th anniversary, the Beijing Film Market Project Pitches, which was established in 2012, has been held for nine consecutive years. Through this platform, nearly 200 projects were connected with the industry, and representative excellent filmmakers emerge one after another.
Among them, Larry Yang won the award for Projects with Greatest Commercial Potential at the 4th BJIFF Project Pitches for his work Mountain Cry. After the release of the film, he also won many important awards at domestic and foreign film festivals. Afterwards, he directed sports film My Other Home. In 2019, Adoring, a family-favored pet film written and directed by him, garnered 683 million yuan at box office. Thanks to his continuous exploration of various genres and themes, he has become a mature professional director with considerable commercial potential who is adapted to the versatility of the market. This year, he was invited to be a member of the Second Round Jury for 10th BJIFF Project Pitches, enabling young creators to move forward with his experience.
Nowadays, the boundary between the Internet and the cinema is blurred day by day. While many online dramas are striving to pursue "film quality", more and more online content is emerging in cinema films. Project Pitches, which is committed to exploring high-quality projects, also pays great attention to find and train new power in the industry as evident by directors Tian Li and Yu Qing, who debuted at the 6th BJIFF Project Pitches. "Waiting is the least efficient way", young filmmakers need to be honed and grow in continuous practice. The development of the online drama has paved way for their rapid growth. After completing Tientsin Mystic franchise, Tian Li is preparing for his first theater movie. Yu Qing is doing the same after completing Mystery of Antiques and The Burning River (to be screened in Youku). As the old saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome”, a filmmaker, who debuts at the Project Pitches and accumulates experience from the creation of drama series, will have different and broad insight for filmmaking.
Undoubtedly, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains and Summer Detective are popular and well-received works from the Project Pitches in the past two years. Gu Xiaogang, the director of Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, winner of the "Special Award" in the Project Pitches of the Beijing Film Market at the 8th BJIFF, found investment at the event. After the release, the film was shortlisted in the International Critics' Week at the Festival de Cannes in 2019 and selected as the first Chinese closing film. It was screened in France on January 1, 2020 with excellent performance in box office. Xu Lei, bringing his Summer Detective without post-production, participated in the WIP Project Pitches at the 9th BJIFF Beijing Film Market. Due to its unique perspective, a distinctive director style and firm determination for filmmaking, it was recognized by the Jury and received attention of the market. Then, Xu was guided and supported by director Rao Xiaozhi. And the film was completed within half a year after the end of the festival. It became the fastest project from Project Pitches to transform into a finished film and enter cinemas. Meanwhile, Xu reached a contract with Dirty Monkeys Studio for cooperation.
