In 1993, his debut feature The Scent of Green Papaya achieved immense success, winning the Caméra d'Or at the 46th Cannes Film Festival and receiving a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards. Following this, he directed Cyclo and The Vertical Ray of the Sun. Together, these works form his acclaimed "Vietnam Trilogy", establishing his prestigious standing in international cinema.

In 2023, he collaborated with Juliette Binoche on The Taste of Things. This film marked a new chapter in his creative journey and earned him the Best Director award at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
