Overview of BJIFF Day2
It’s the second day after the opening ceremony of the 10th Beijing International Festival (BJIFF) on August 22. Various screenings and forums took place in an orderly manner. Here, let’s have an overview of major events of the BJIFF on its second day.
1. The BJIFF 10th Anniversary Forum: Decade-long Devotion to Films, Working Hard to Press Ahead
Anniversary Forum was held at Beijing Yanqi Lake International Convention & Exhibition Center. Wang Jiequn, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Director of the Beijing Municipal Film Administration, Vice Chairman & Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Film Festival, Xu Tao, Member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Chief Editor of Beijing Radio & Television Station and Executive Deputy Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Film Festival were present.
As the first forum -- “Theme Forum”, it focused on hot topics such as opportunities and challenges, strategic layout and structural optimization of the film industry and invited well-known filmmakers to have in-depth exchanges and high-end dialogues. Guests present were Wang Zhonglei, Vice Chairman and CEO of Huayi Brothers Media Corp., Lu Chuan, director, screenwriter and producer, Chen Sicheng, director and screenwriter, Wen Muye, director and screenwriter, Larry Yang, young director and winner of the "Projects with Greatest Commercial Potential" at the 4th BJIFF Project Pitches, Yan Bingyan, the first winner of the Tiantan Award for Best Actress, Li Xun, film scholar and senior research fellow of the China Film Art Research Center, Sha Dan, curator of the BJIFF Beijing Film Panorama and others.
2. Launch Ceremony of the BJIFF 10th Anniversary Exhibition: Decade of Endeavor, Fulfilment of Aspirations
On the morning of August 23, Decade of Endeavor, Fulfilment of Aspirations — Launch Ceremony of the BJIFF 10th Anniversary Exhibition & Release Conference of Blue Paper of Beijing International Film Festival was held at the China National Film Museum.
During the event, Chen Ling, Secretary of Party Leadership Group and Head of the China National Film Museum delivered a speech. Xu Tao, Member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Chief Editor of Beijing Radio & Television Station and Executive Deputy Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Film Festival, donated exhibits to the China National Film Museum on behalf of the Organizing Committee. Liao Xiangzhong, President of the Communication University of China delivered a speech. In addition, Liao, together with Du Feijin, Member of the Standing Committee and Director of the Publicity Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China,, released the Blue Paper of Beijing International Film Festival.
The exhibition chronologically presented the development and brilliant achievements of the BJIFF over the years from the perspectives of filmmaker, award, film, conversation, industry, festival and event.
3. China Film-Huaxia Film Presentation of the 10th BJIFF Boosts Market Prosperity
Today is the second day of China Film-Huaxia Film Presentation of the 10th BJIFF, where The Rescue, Legend of Deification, Kikujiro, Children of the Sea and other films were promoted.
4. Online BJIFF-Class-Sunac Culture Animation Class: Hot Class Opens
The Online BJIFF-Class-Sunac Culture Animation Class, carried out by the BJIFF and Sunac Culture, is the first online animation class of the BJIFF covering the complete system of animation industry, and a key online event of the 10th “Online BJIFF”.
The class will be offered in 8 sessions. Sunac Culture's animation professionals will be invited to introduce the history and current situation of the animation industry at home and abroad, the process of animated film production, the derivative development and planning of animation IP, and other key topics of the animation industry and introduce the ecology of the animation industry in a systematic manner.
5. “Film+” Science and Technology Section: Films Light up the Dream of Science
The Science and Technology Section of the 10th BJIFF & Special Effects Film Screening of China Science and Technology Museum was launched on August 23. With the theme "Films Light up the Dream of Science", it showcases the achievements in film technology development to the public and conveys the concept of loving nature and advocating science through online screenings, popular science live streaming and other ways. It will present 27 outstanding films from 7 countries including China, Germany, and Japan, such as The Adventures of Grizzly and Squirrel, Waves and Bubbles and Journey to the Stars on the official website of the China Digital Science and Technology Museum from August 23 to September 13, 2020. 14 online science popularization sessions organized by the China Science and Technology Museum in association with the Beijing Planetarium, as well as science and technology museums in 11 provinces and municipalities such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Jilin and Inner Mongolia will be offered. On August 23, the first session themed "Light up the Starry Sky in Your Heart" was released, where the invited guests had dialogues and movie fans enjoyed Journey to the Stars online. In addition, the sector of online "Special Effects Film Annual Conferences" will create an industrial exchange platform, and serve the common development of science popularization and the sci-tech film industry.
6. Online and Offline Screenings Heat Movie Fans
On August 23, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains and Only You Alone were screened, with respective meet-and-greet with cast & crew held in Beijing.
At the Broadway Cinematheque, cast & crew of Only You Alone shared their experience during the production. Zhou Zhou, director and screenwriter of the film, Chi Yun, actress and screenwriter and Li Chunyu, director of photography were present.
The film tells the story of Chi Li (played by Chi Yun), a girl who suffers from epilepsy and dreams to be a dancer. She is pushed into the abyss of despair by the life, but she overcomes every difficulty with her inner power. After the screening, the film received continuous enthusiastic applause from the audience. During the meet-and-greet with cast & crew, Chi Yun, as the actress and screenwriter of the film, said that she had spent 2 years to shape the independent soul of the character Chi Li. It is the best farewell between her and the character as the film was screened. She even sobbed when it came to her empathy on the figure. At last, cast & crew and the audience took a photo together to record this unforgettable moment.
In addition, 4 films of the TV Screenings section: The Final Master, The Wandering Earth, Operation Mekong and The Grandmaster were screened in Beijing Satellite TV, BTV Movie & TV Channel and BTV Youth Channel.
A touching scene at the Hall 1 of Beijing Jiayu Jinyi International Cinema City Co., Ltd., where Cinema Paradiso was just screened, was impressive. A girl gently played the theme song of the film with her harmonica, and the audience who were leaving the hall stood in solemnity on this rainy day. After the song ended, the commercial cinema witnessed the third round of applause at the hall.
7. Wet Season Screened at Maple Garden Drive-in Cinema
Today’s Outdoor Screenings offered Wet Season at Maple Garden Drive-in Cinema, where passionate movie fans drove to enjoy the film.
8. Release Conference of 731
The release conference of film 731 was held on August 23. The film, with Zhao Linshan, who directed The Assassins, as the director, Liu Heng, the screenwriter of Assembly, as the screenwriter, and Nick Cheung, who starred Unbeatable, as the actor, tells about a tragic history that thousands of innocent people have been persecuted since 1933 by Unit 731 during the World War II, which had committed flagrant crime in China.
