The 10th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) was officially open on August 22, which also marked the 34th day of the reopening of movie theaters in China. The reunion after being apart for so long is worth cherishing. The 10th BJIFF with the theme of “In Pursuit of A Shared Dream” has come back with the greater glory of movies.
A lot of terrific events and activities were already delivered in an organized way on the opening day. Let’s take a look back on the major events on Day 1.
1. Launch Ceremony: China Film Will Present More Marvelous Artistic Styles
The Launch Ceremony of the 10th BJIFF, hosted by the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality and China Media Group, and organized by Beijing Municipal Film Administration, Beijing Municipal Radio and Television Bureau, Beijing Radio & Television Station, Huairou District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality and Beijing Enterprises Group Company Limited, was held today at the Beijing Yanqi Lake International Convention & Exhibition Center.
Guests including Zhang Yimou, film director, Wu Jing, ambassador of the 10th BJIFF, Yu Dong, Founder and Chairman of the Bona Film Group Co., Ltd., Fu Ruoqing, Vice Chairman and General Manager of China Film Co., Ltd. and Chairman of Huaxia Film Distribution Co., Ltd., Cao Yin, Director of the China Movie Channel (CCTV6), Sun Xianghui, Director of the China Film Archive, Huang Huilin, Senior Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Beijing Normal University, and Chen Daoming, actor and President of the China Film Association, delivered speeches and shared their expectation of Chinese films.
Director Zhang Yimou said, “Since the pandemic is till not cover, we are facing great difficulties in life and creation. Although the film is not our life, it reflects our true life. There are more Chinese stories to be further told and told to the world.We need to work harder to bring some new stories to everyone, which should be touching and powerful.”
2. In Pursuit of a Shared Dream: Four Generations of Directors Get Together to Talk About Future of Films
The program is composed of four chapters, namely “In Faith of a Great Rebirth”, “In Witness of a Glorious Decade”, “In Search of a Grand Hope” and “In Pursuit of a Shared Dream”. Renowned filmmaking professionals, including Xie Fei, Zhang Yimou, Jia Zhangke, Wen Muye, Wu Jing, Wu Gang, Tang Guoqiang, Hai Qing and Du Jiang made speeches in combination with video clips and interviews to narrate filmmakers’ thoughts and perseverance in creation, and express their firm confidence in the gradual recovery and prosperity of the industry.
3. Youth Science Movie Section Presents Youth Outlook Online
The Youth Science Movie Section of the 10th Beijing International Film Festival & 2nd Beijing International Youth Science Video Exhibition & Screenings (hereinafter referred to as the “event”) guided by the Beijing Association for Science and Technology and Organizing Committee Office of the 10th BJIFF, and organized by the Beijing Children and Youth Science Center and Beijing Children and Youth Science Education Association was held online in the morning of August 22. Its launch ceremony—the Online Youth Red Carpet was live streamed on the Xinhuanet, and attracted a total of 350,000 viewers.
The event utilized cinematography technologies to enlighten their scientific dreams, improve their scientific quality and support them in serving the country by science, and display teenagers’ mental outlook and cultural confidence with the demeanor of China and the capital.
4. Online BJIFF-Class: Enjoy Most Professional Film Classes at Home
On August 22, the BJIFF has launched a series of “Decade Moments Cinema” franchise classes online. A total of 11 classes are presented by experts and scholars from the China Film Art Research Center and Beijing Film Academy regarding the classic films screened in the Beijing Film Panorama of the 10th BJIFF, related filmmakers and behind-the-scene stories. Such classic films include the Cinema Paradiso, The Matrix, Apocalypse Now and Forrest Gump will be interpreted. The event will last till September 22.
5. Public Welfare Film Panorama Week: Screening of Unforgettable Classic Movies for Free
The Public Welfare Film Panorama Week of the 10th BJIFF is scheduled concurrently from August 22 to 29. War action, romance, history, comedy and other genres of Chinese movies enjoying household popularity, such as The Captain, My people, My Country, and Plain Shots will be screened. A mobile projectionist team is in charge of the specific screening schedule of the event for the 14 towns and 2 sub-districts in Huairou District. The BJIFF has never ceased to engage more spectators in its events and activities.
6. China Film-Huaxia Film Presentation of the 10th BJIFF Boosts Market Prosperity
With a view to reinvigorating the film industry out of huge impacts from the pandemic, and boosting the market prosperity, the China Film-Huaxia Film Presentation of the 10th BJIFF, hosted by the Organizing Committee of the 10th BJIFF, and organized by the China Film Group Corporation and Huaxia Film Distribution Co., Ltd., is held from August 22 to 23. The event aims to promote 57 upcoming Chinese and foreign films in the second half of 2020 in the hope that continued launches and marketing campaigns may help accelerate the recovery of China’s film market.
7. Meet-and-greet with Cast & Crew of The Reunions
The 10th BJIFF organized a special screening event of Da Peng’s new film The Reunions on August 22 in the China Film Archive. The tickets of the event were sold out in no time. This time, Da Peng made appearance in the China Film Archive again and brought audience the most unique viewing experience.
Based on Da Peng’s real experience, The Reunions is composed of two parts. The movie utilized fictional and factual cinematography to present a series of incidents that Wang Lili, who’s worked in Beijing for a decade, runs into back in her hometown Ji’an. The film features a combination of fictional and factual viewing experience. Director Da Peng, leading actress Liu Lu (playing Wang Lili) and producer Chen Zhixi attended the screening event, exchanged with Sha Dan, curator of the Beijing Film Panorama, and shared with audience the behind-the scene stories.
8. Huairou-Miyun Line: A Train Bound for Spring is Departing
The 10th BJIFF planned a 30-second promotional film—Huairou-Miyun Line · A Train to the World of Films starring Du Jiang, his wife Huo Siyan and son Du Yulin.
The Huairou-Miyun Line departs from Qinghe Station and arrives at the Gubeikou Station through Haidian, Changping, Huairou and Miyun Districts. The whole ride takes 2 hours and 20 minutes. There are a dozen of key scenic spots along the ride, such as the Yanqi Lake, Mutianyu Section of the Great Wall, Hongluo Temple, Beijing Wtown, Mangshan National Forest Park, Yunlongjian, Black Dragon Pool, Taoyuan Valley, as well as other tourist attractions, such as the Yanqi Lake International Convention & Exhibition Center, Sunrise Kempinski Hotel, Beijing Emblem, and Miyun Reservoir. The Line is named another “Train Bound for Spring” in Beijing.
9. Screening of New Year Sacrifice: Bring Old Movies Back to Life with Digital Restoration
During the pandemic, the restoration team of the China Film Archive remastered the New Year Sacrifice in 4K. The restored version was screened in the Hall 1 of the China Film Archive on the evening of August 22. The curatorial team of the Beijing Film Panorama scheduled the film on the first weekend evening of the BJIFF in honor of the 10th anniversary, and in the hope that filmgoers may be able to watch finely restored classic Chinese films in the Hall 1 of the China Film Archive.
Before the screening, Ms. Sun Xianghui, Director of the China Film Archive, shared with present filmgoers the behind-the-scene stories about the restoration team of the China Film Archive.
The film (4K) has been selected into the Cannes Classics 2020. It’s the second film restored by the China Film Archive to be included in the Cannes Classics, meaning that China Film Archive’s restoration technology has been up to world’s advanced level. Today, the film produced more than seven decades ago has been brought back to life via the digital restoration technology.
The Launch Ceremony held on the morning of August 22 marked the official opening of the 10th BJIFF. On the day, the feature program—In Pursuit of a Shared Dream produced by the Beijing Radio & Television Station was aired, in which film enthusiasts became the shining stars on the stage. The 10th BJIFF is dedicated to filmmakers and those embarking on new pursuit of dreams with films. Despite the absence of a star-studded red carpet, the simple Launch Ceremony of the 10th BJIFF was more relatable than ever, enabling fans to feel the pulse of movies in tranquility.
