Kong and Jigme, Poetic Aroma in Cinemas
At 6:30PM on August 14, 2022, Kong and Jigme, shortlisted in the Competition Section, Tiantan Award of the 12th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), was premiered in Beijing CBD Wanda Cinema. Producer Ji Huanxue, directors Chen Guoxing and Lhapal Gyal, lead actors Song Yang and Jinpa, cinematographer Guo Daming, were present on site.
Before the screening, Chen Guoxing and Lhapal Gyal greeted the audience and made a brief introduction to the film. Then, the cast & crew, along with the audience, had a great experience with the story between Kong and Jigme who share a sincere friendship beyond time and space.

With the last line on the screen fading away, all the audience returned to the cinema from the poetic Shigatse, Tibet, and gave warm applause to the cast & crew of the film for their appearance. At the introduction by the moderator the host "Ke Mo loves Xiao Ye (轲墨爱小野)", the producer Ji Huanxue, directors Chen Guoxing and Lhapal Gyal, cast Song Yang and Jinpa, cinematographer Guo Daming and other crew stepped on the stage to meet and greet the audience.

At the event, Chen Guoxing said that the film was a new attempt for him since it has a smaller point of entry compared with his previous works. While making this film, they selectively cut and reconnected the real experience of roles and applied artistic processing based on facts. "This film in expression is more artistic, rather than traditional and conservative, with more emphasis on emotions and feelings".

Lhapal Gyal shared some details from the filmmaking. He believed that there would be more room for the creation and development of Tibetan films. When talking about the cooperation with Chen Guoxing, he said that it was very pleasant for him since they perfectly matched each other, and they could grasp every detail in communication towards the goal to make the best film to the audience.

Ji Huanxue said that shooting this film was very difficult given the time-consuming preparation and toilsome creation. He expressed gratitude to the directors for their persistence in exploration and innovation, leading the crew to overcome the difficulties in shooting, and finally presenting the perfect result. He shared some behind-the-scenes stories, "There are 161 persons in the production group, of which more than 40 were withdrawn for physical reasons, and nearly everyone successfully lost weight. The scenes and props related to Han nationality in the film are all prepared by the crew, which reflects the difficulties in shooting this film".

Song Yang also expressed the crew for their great care and efforts. He thought it was an unforgettable experience, and Kong and Jigme was a combination of academy and ecology. For a better interpretation of Kong, he devoted a lot in field research in advance, and asked a language professor to teach him Liaocheng Dialect. Song Yang wants to fully understand the real characters and make a down-to-earth interpretation to show the nature of Tibetans in a real sense.

Jinpa said that there are always some regrets and imperfections in his performances, but they are the driving force for him to make progress next time. Guo Daming said that the image style was not given a high priority in shooting, but the original script and characters' emotions were the leading rule to reproduce the original look of that time.

During the Q&A session, facing an extraordinary film, besides long-lasting applauses, the audience also raised their hands to ask the questions they wanted to know most. As for the name of the film -- Kong and Jigme (《回西藏》in Chinese), Chen Guoxing told us his understanding: Since Tibet is the second hometown of Kong, coming to Tibet for the second time at the end of the film is not a "visiting” but a "returning". Lhapal Gyal said that despite an extensive focus on Tibetan films, the "New Wave in Tibetan Films" is not big enough, and there is still much room for development and many types for film shooting.

There were some "special" audiences on site who also raised their own questions to the cast and crew. Director Zheng Dasheng thanked the cast and crew for their hard work, saying that the film inspired him greatly. It was the second time for Chen Guoxing to take this kind of theme. He made a difference to the theme from another angle of narration in his unique sense of direction and discretion.

Tan Fei, a film critic, thought that the film is a breakthrough in context and expression, which shows him more possibilities of the “main melody films”. It is necessary to make a breakthrough in context and expression. He spoke highly of the performances of Jinpa and Song Yang, and expressed his appreciation for the narrative of the film the audience could know the details of the life of the characters in the film and in real sense. He congratulated the directors for making such an excellent film, and said that it was a great cooperation.

There was not much information on the film released before the announcement of the shortlist for the Competition Section, Tiantan Award. Most of the audience came here because of their recognition of the cast and crew of the film and also Tiantan Award. It was under this context that the film earned great applause and praise. We saw a lot of comments on social media after the premiere, which proved to us that it was indeed a good film that can never be missed. We hope that Kong and Jigme would be screened publicly as soon as possible when its true lifestyle and poetic aroma reach every corner in our hearts.
