The 13th BJIFF Tiantan Award Jury
Zhang Yimou, an internationally acclaimed director and a landmark figure in the history of both Chinese and world cinema, was warmly welcomed by the journalists present as the jury president of the BJIFF for the first time. Talking about how to find a common emotional language in the world like Chinese-style romance when making films, he believes that human beings all over the world share the same basic emotions, and that on this basis, shaping the characters and deconstructing the story is sure to move the audience, “A good film work is one that evokes an emotional response from all people.”
From experiencing the era of filming rationing at studios, witnessing the establishment of cinema chains in China, to growing into one of China’s most influential directors who ushered in the era of Chinese blockbusters, Zhang has been burning with creativity and keeping acute insights into the market for nearly 40 years. At the event, when asked “where China’s film market is heading”, he shared his views, “China will focus on expanding the scale of the film market and strengthening the quality of film, and most importantly, we should go global, letting Chinese culture, Chinese works, and sentiments of Chinese people shape the world.” Further, he also called upon all filmmakers to “do their own part, put their heart and soul into filmmaking, work hard for the film career, and strive for high-quality films. If that’s what everyone thinks and does, there will surely be a promising market.”

For a few years now, the BJIFF has kept improving the system of fostering young directors, and focused more on cooperation with the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF). This year, a number of outstanding projects from the HKIFF have been invited to participate in the second-round selection of the Hong Kong, China Subsection, part of the BJIFF Project Pitches.
In terms of attention to and support for young filmmakers, the practice of Stanley Kwan, who has been devoting himself to helping and nurturing new blood as a mentor, ties in with that of the BJIFF. Touching upon “how the BJIFF can better create opportunities for young filmmakers”, he said that the festival’s Project Pitches section plays a pivotal role in fostering young directors and providing opportunities for young filmmakers. And the continued improvement of its rules and principles will be helpful to young filmmakers in creating good works.

Israeli director Nadav Lapid also agrees that film festivals have a “positive effect” on young directors. He added that there are many talented people around the world willing to throw themselves into the film industry, and that they need the recognition and attention of film festivals. From his personal experience, he shared how the recognition of the highest prizes from international film festivals has really helped him, “At least I can hold my ground and proceed with creation.”

As an iconic director of Thai short films, Pimpaka Towira responded to the question of “whether short films represent the future of film production” like that. In many people’s opinion, once a director had their feature film, he or she may not produce short films anymore. But as a matter of fact, short films are not the exclusive domain of young directors. She herself basically produces one short film every year and conveys her experience and opinions to the audience and society through storytelling.

Remaining true to his acting purpose and making him a household name is the best picture of Zhang Songwen’s journey of performing arts. When asked “how to find something you love and stick to what you love”, Zhang Songwen, who is on the Tiantan Award jury a second time, shared his own experience of starting his career in film at the age of 25 by enrolling in Beijing Film Academy. He encouraged young people to be brave enough to pursue what they love, “If you think it’s right, go for it. You have to have the guts, give little care to what others say, and move in your direction.”

It is interesting to note that this year marks not only the 13th year of the launch of the BJIFF, but also the 13th year of jury member Zhou Dongyu’s debut. From a green newcomer to an actress with fine acting and many wins of film awards, Zhou Dongyu said that if there is a film that has shaped her greatest along the way, it is Under the Hawthorn Tree directed by Zhang Yimou. Making reference to the relationship between works and actors, she adopted a vivid metaphor with the tree, trunk, and fruit, “If the director is the trunk, the actor may be the fruit. Only with the hard work of watering and cultivating the tree from each staff member can we be seen by more people.”
