WONG Kar Wai,Jury President of the 8th Tiantan Award
Born in Shanghai and raised in Hong Kong, Wong Kar Wai is an internationally celebrated director and writer whose unique narrative and visual styles have inspired a generation of filmmakers.
In 1988, his film debut As Tears Go By was released and critically acclaimed. In 1990, he directed the second film Days of Being Wild, which won the Best Film, Best Director and other awards at the 10th Hong Kong Film Awards. Wong was introduced to global audiences in 1994 with Chungking Express. In 1997, his film Happy Together won the Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, making Wong the first Chinese to won this award and his international standing consolidated. In 2000, In the Mood for Love received the Technical Grand Prize and Best Actor at 53rd Cannes Film Festival. In 2006, Wong made history as the first Asian director to chair the jury at the 59th Cannes Film Festival. The same year, Wong was knighted by the French government’s National Order of the Legion of Honour. Furthermore, Wong was awarded France’s Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2013. In 2007, Wong’s English-language feature debut My Blueberry Nights opened the 60th Cannes Film Festival. Wong’s latest film, the martial arts epic The Grandmaster (2013) opened the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival of which he chaired the jury.He also won the Best Director Award at 4th Beijing International Film Festival by this film.
Wong was invited as the exhibition artistic director for the art exhibition China: Through the Looking Glass held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in 2015, which is the MET’s top 5 most-visited exhibit ever.
DUAN Yihong,Jury of the 8th Tiantan Award
DUAN Yihong, born in Xinjiang province in 1973, is a notable actor in China. He graduated from the Acting Department at the Central Academy of Drama. In 1998, Duan started his career in the National Theatre of China, where he starred in Jinghui Meng's well-acclaimed play Rhinoceros in Love. In 2006, he starred in the TV series Soldiers Sortie, which introduced him to a larger audience. In 2009, he performed in the TV series My Chief and My Regiment. In 2013, he was awarded the Most Anticipated Actor for his performance in White Deer Plain at the 13th Chinese Film Media Awards. In 2015, his performance in The Dead End brought him the Golden Goblet Award for Best Actor at the 18th Shanghai International Film Festival. In 2016, he won the Media Award for Best Performance at the 16th Chinese Film Media Awards. In 2017, he received the Star Asia Award at the 16th New York Asian Film Festival. And in the same year, he also won the Best Actor Award at the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival for his performance in The Looming Storm, which makes him the first Chinese actor who has won two Best Actor Awards in different class A international film festivals.
Jan A.P. KACZMAREK,Jury of the 8th Tiantan Award
Jan A.P. Kaczmarek was born (April 29th, 1953) and educated in Poland.
As an Oscar - winning composer, Jan A.P. Kaczmarek has scored more than 60 films, including Finding Neverland, Hachi: a Dog's Tale, Unfaithful, The Visitor, Aimee & Jaguar, War and Peace, Quo Vadis, Total Eclipse, Washington Square.
He moved to America in 1989, where he began composing for theatre, winning a Drama Desk Award for his music for the New York Shakespeare Festival's 1992 production of John Ford's Tis Pity She's A Whore (1992), directed by Joanne Akalaitis. In 2004, Jan won The National Board of Review Awards for Best Score of the Year because of Marc Forster’s Finding Neverland (2004). Also because of this film, he received his first Oscar for Best Original Score at the 77th Academy Awards in 2005. He was also nominated for both Golden Globe Awards and the British Academy Film Awards.
He was commissioned to write symphonic and choral pieces for important national occasions in Poland. He is a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and European Film Academy. He founded and directs Transatlantyk Festival in Lodz, Poland. And Kaczmarek was The Jury Chairman at the 25th Warsaw International Film Festival in 2009.
Jonathan MOSTOW,Jury of the 8th Tiantan Award
Jonathan Mostow is an American director, screenwriter and producer.
Jonathan Mostow began his filmmaking career as a student at Harvard University, where he directed award-winning shorts and documentaries.
As a director, his credits include the blockbuster hits Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the WWII submarine thriller U-571 (2000) starring Matthew McConaughey, which garnered two Academy Awards nominations, and the critically acclaimed Breakdown (1997) starring Kurt Russell. Other films include the Bruce Willis science-fiction drama Surrogates (2009) and the 2017 thriller The Hunter’s Prayer starring Sam Worthington.
As a producer, Jonathan Mostow’s credits include The Game (1997) starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn, Hancock (2008) starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron, and Playing for Keeps (2012) starring Gerard Butler, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Uma Thurman .
C?lin Peter NETZER,Jury of the 8th Tiantan Award
C?lin Peter NETZER was born in 1975 (May, 1st) in Petrosani, Romania. In 1983, he immigrated to Germany together with his parents. From 1984 he has been living in Stuttgart where he graduated from elementary school and high school. In 1994, after graduation, he started the courses of the Theatre and Film University of Bucharest, Romania, Film Direction Department, and in 1999 he obtained his diploma as film director. His short & feature films (both entitled Maria) were screened in prestigious festivals around the world and won awards in Locarno (Grand Prize of the Jury and the Bronze Leopards for the actors). The feature film was also nominated for the EFA Awards in 2003. His next feature, Medal of Honor (2009), was selected in more than 30 festivals and awarded in Thessaloniki with the Silver Alexander and four other prizes, in Turin, Miami, Durres, Los Angeles, Zagreb. Child’s Pose (2013) is his 3rd feature film awarded with the Golden Bear at 63rd Berlin International Film Festival, the first Romanian feature to receive this award and Romania’s official entry for Academy Awards – Best Foreign Language Film in 2013. With his most recent feature, Ana, mon amour (2017), C?lin returned to the Official Selection in Berlinale and received the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution.
Ruben ?STLUND,Jury of the 8th Tiantan Award
Ruben ?stlund was born in 1974 in Styrs, Sweden. He started as a director of skiing films in the 1990s, and eventually went on to study film at the University of Gothenburg. His feature debut The Guitar Mongoloid (2004) won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2005. His second feature Involuntary (2008) premiered in the Un Certain regard at the 61st Cannes Film Festival. The film was then distributed in more than 20 countries and shown at numerous festivals, awarding Ruben international recognition. Two years later, he won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the Berlin International Film Festival for his short Incident by a Bank. The premiere of his third feature film Play (2011) was held in the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Play also brought him the Best Director Award at the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival. His fourth feature film Force Majeure (2014) premiered in the Un Certain Regard at the 67th Cannes Film Festival, where it was awarded the Jury Prize. Force Majeure was also nominated at the Golden Globes and shortlisted for an Oscar.
His newest feature film The Square (2017) won the Palme d'Or at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. It was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards and at the 75th Golden Globes. The film has been distributed in over 70 countries.
SHU Qi,Jury of the 8th Tiantan Award
SHU Qi was born in 1976(April,16th) in Taiwan,China.
In 1996, SHU Qi starred in Viva Erotica which garnered seven nominations at the 16th Hong Kong Film Awards and nominated for the Golden Bear at the 47th Berlin International Film Festival. For her performance in this film, SHU Qi won the Best Supporting Actress and Best New Artist at the 16th Hong Kong Film Awards. In 1998, she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 35th Golden Horse Awards and the 18th Hong Kong Film Awards for her performance in Portland Street Blues. In 2005, for her performance in Three Times, she won the Best Actress award at the 42nd Golden Horse Awards. In 2008, she was invited to be the jury member of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2009, she was appointed as the jury member of the 62nd Cannes Film Festival and also won the title of Excellent Overseas Chinese Actress at the 13th Ornamental Column Awards for her performance in If You Are the One. She starred in Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons in 2013. In 2015, She starred in The Assassin, nominated for the Competition Section at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, and she won the Best Actress award at the 10th Asian Film Awards. In 2015, she starred in Mojin: The Lost Legend, which earned a box office revenue exceeding CNY 1 billion in eight days from the release.
