Science fiction has been what he is yearning for all the time despite his transition from legal major to filmmaking. Following his graduation from the Law School of Hainan University in 2003, Frant Gwo threw himself into Beijing Film Academy for further study of Master of Management.
Regardless of all the obstacles, in 2011, his first feature film Lee's Adventure, adapted from the short animation of the same name, was successfully released nationwide when his unique and creative ideas started to shine. The film won the European Fantastic Film Festival Federation Asian Award of the 16th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, the Nebula Award of the 2016 Global Chinese Science Fiction Film for Best Original Screenplay, etc.
In 2014, the film with focus on the young generations, My Old Classmate directed by him was screened, which was the first work that made him known to the public for a total of nearly 500 million yuan at the box office. The film won the Committee Special Award of the 21st Beijing College Student Film Festival, the Golden Angel Award of the 10th Chinese American Film Festival, etc.
Surprisingly, in spite of the great reputation of these films on the market, he turned to the science fiction films that he is longing for, and brought us the miracle of Wandering Earth.
  Wandering Earth
In 2014, Frant Gwo, along with young filmmakers like Ning Hao, Xiao Yang, Lu Yang and Chen Sicheng, as arranged by China Film Administration, visited Paramount Pictures for exchange and communication, during which he realized the significance of film industrialization. "It's not that we lack imagination, but that it's difficult to turn our imaginations into images we like", he expects that the Wandering Earth could be a sci-fi film based on a set of standard and professional procedures for industrial films.

It took seven years to make this wonder from preparation, shooting, post-production to release.
With only 210 million yuan as budgeted, the film was jointly prepared and produced by over 7,000 persons that created 3,000 conceptual design drawings, 8,000 sub-lens drawings, 10,000 props and 100,000 extended square meters of live-action buildings. There are a total of 2,003 visual effects lenses in the film, of which 50% are of technically difficult for full CG lenses and CG stand-in. A lot of multi-user collaborative drafting tools and authoring tools of dynamic lens for visual preview were also used in the production.
His ingenuity and craftsmanship put up the achievement of film industrialization in China, and his unremitting efforts of only a three to four-hour sleep per day in the four-year production brought the world this marvel. Of all the lens, a record of at most 251 modifications to a scene was made. Frant Gwo led his team to overcome numerous difficulties and set up a valuable process of industrialization for China.
Words of Frant Gwo to the crew of Wandering Earth
“If you want to have something you never had, you must do something you never did. This is not the end, but a new beginning.”
Frant Gwo set a landmark for the film industrialization in China, especially when China is moving towards a great power of films. Meanwhile, the Wandering Earth also set a good example for the sci-fi films in China, which highlights the growing strength and technological power of China.
Amid the long way of film industrialization in China, the Wandering Earth is just the beginning. However, the film tells us that "wherever the result leads human history, we decide to choose hope". We are looking forward to Frant Gwo and other members of the Jury of Tiantan Award to find the outstanding films for the new era. The spirit and strength of filmmakers will be here with you forever!
