The 15th BJIFF NEWHER Workshop·General Rules for Young Director Recruitment
1. Overview
The BJIFF NEWHER Women-Focused Film Section aims to inspire the thinking of women through joint efforts for discussing and producing films from the female perspective, at the same time cultivating young female creators, so as to inject new impetus for sound and steady development of the film industry and pass on the “women’s voice”.
The NEWHER Women-Focused Film Section plans to start its social recruitment for young female directors. After professional selection, 10 candidates will be listed to be the trainee of the NEWHER Workshop and participate in its courses. 10 young female directors will need to make a statement for their projects, and have a mutual selection with 5 producer mentors. Successfully selected young directors can participate in the shooting of short films of the workshop, and will need to complete the film shooting within the set time and submit the final work of a 10-minute female-themed short film under the instruction and support of the producer mentors.
2. Eligibility
2.1 Qualification:
2.1.1 Applicant must be a female director;
2.1.2 Applicant must be experienced in directing short films, and has no feature films being released;
2.1.3 Applicant shall complete the film shooting within the set time and submit the final work of a 10-minute female-themed short film.
2.2Materials:
2.2.1 Director’s bio, attaching the link of the video that is self-directed and self-produced;
2.2.2 Synopsis of the short film to be filmed in the training camp and the project plan;
2.2.3 A video (no more than 3 minutes) of the director’s statement, including the plot, the role development, the emotional expression and the filming plan, etc., which shall be refined and vivid.
2.3Entry submission:
2.3.1 The entry shall be submitted online, please send your materials to newher@bjiff.com with the title of your name + contact information. In case of any omissions or misrepresentation of the project profile, the concerned entry will not be accepted.
2.3.2 After the entry submission, the staff will verify the completeness of the submitted entry, and a confirmation email will be sent to you after approval.
2.3.3 The deadline for entries for the NEWHER Workshop·General Rules for Young Director Recruitment is September 14 - October 26, 2024. The BJIFF Organizing Committee will review the entries and shortlist the directors at the late October;
2.3.4 Once the shortlisted directors are announced, the BJIFF Organizing Committee will contact the applicant/point of contact listed in the entry form. Those that fail to be confirmed by the deadline are deemed to have withdrawn, and substituted by subsequent projects (Please make sure to leave a valid e-mail address and phone number in the entry form).
2.3.5 short film projects produced in this section are the productions of the BJIFF, and their copyrights shall be owned by the BJIFF Organizing Committee (Applicants can apply for authorization after the NEWHER Women-Focused Film Section events and activities to participate in the selection of other contests)
2.4 Privileges for Shortlisted Directors
2.4.1 Shortlisted directors (up to two per project) will be invited to attend relevant events and activities in the 15th BJIFF NEWHER Section as “Cast & Crew”. 2.4.2 5 shortlisted directors will be awarded with 100,000 yuan/per film (before tax) as the funding support along with the support of resources in relevant industry, which will be used for film shooting and production;
2.4.3 All the 5 shortlisted directors will have the opportunity to negotiate with the buyers, distributors, and programmers after completing the filming.
3. Awards
NEWHER will invite the Workshop & Masterclass instructors to be the jury for the NEWHER·Short Film Review who will watch the 5 short films and select and award the excellent short films. The Committee will collect the marking tables for announcement. after comprehensive assessment, honors of the “Best Short Film”，“Best Director”, “Short Film with Greatest Commercial Potential”, and “Excellent Short Film” will be awarded for those short films.
4. Disclaimer
All entries must be submitted by the sole authorized representative who owns the legal rights of the NEWHER Workshop·Young Director Recruitment project. The project owner and its sole authorized representative are obliged to: ensure the originality, legality and complete ownership and copyright of the entry; ensure that the entry and related information do not infringe the rights and interests of any third party; ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the entry and related information; any legal and financial liabilities arising from the aforesaid reasons shall be borne by the project owner and its authorized representative. The project owner and its authorized representative will resolve and assume full responsibility for any third-party dispute arising from such matters. Should such matters result in losses to the BJIFF Organizing Committee and related parties, the project owner will be fully liable for such losses. The BJIFF Organizing Committee reserves the right to add the “BJIFF” or logo to the opening/closing credits of the shortlisted entries once the filming of such entries is completed. And the credit arrangement should be confirmed in writing by the BJIFF Organizing Committee in advance. Documents, materials and information submitted by authorized representatives of shortlisted projects should be specified and explained in writing when submitted to the BJIFF Organizing Committee if any confidential content is included, otherwise they are considered non-confidential. Award-winning project owners should prioritize participation in the screening, award ceremony, Opening & Closing Ceremony, and Red Carpet among other activities of the BJIFF.
The BJIFF Organizing Committee will handle applicants’ information discreetly. The relevant staff will ensure the security of the materials submitted, and make sure that they will not be lost, leaked or damaged. Owners of the NEWHER Workshop·Young Director Recruitment projects are responsible for the safekeeping, confidentiality and information security of the relevant materials in their possession.
The presentation and negotiation in connection with the projects of the NEWHER Workshop·Young Director Recruitment are independent expression of opinions by various parties. Such presentation, explanation and negotiation made by each party do not represent the views of the BJIFF Organizing Committee, nor do the BJIFF Organizing Committee assume any guarantee liabilities.
The BJIFF Organizing Committee reserves the final right to interpret all the activities of the NEWHER Workshop·Young Director Recruitment project.
