TASHI, WIP Project from the 14th BJIFF Project Pitches, Selected for the Main Competition at the Warsaw International Film Festival!
Recently, the film Tashi, produced by Pema Tseden, written and directed by Dargye Tenzin, and produced by Su Mingqing, was selected for the 40th Warsaw International Film Festival's main competition section. This marks the only Chinese film to be included in this year's Documentary Competition of the International Competition section. Earlier, Tashi won the "Most Potential Award" at the 14th BJIFF Project Pitches. At the time of its participation in the BJIFF Project Pitches, Tashi had just completed all of its footage in Xining and Yushu, Qinghai, and was in the midst of a challenging post-production phase. Just six months later, the project has been completed and is now making its international debut at a prestigious film festival, becoming the fastest-incubated project from the 14th BJIFF Project Pitches.

This film marks the directorial debut of Chinese director Dargye Tenzin, who previously served as the assistant director on films such as Tharlo, Jinpa, Wangdrak’s Rain Boots, and One and Four. As a low-to-mid-budget film, Tashi showcased its unique subject matter and perspective during the roadshow of BJIFF Project Pitches. Director Dargye Tenzin and producer Mingqing Su not only highlighted the film's innovative theme and distinct viewpoint but also candidly revealed the common challenges faced by low-budget films, particularly the issue of funding shortages.
Tashi presenting at the BJIFF Project Pitches roadshow
"We came to the BJIFF Project Pitches seeking post-production funding. Low-budget films are quite challenging, and we hope to find like-minded partners and mentors. We welcome distribution companies that are interested in joining us on this journey," said producer Mingqing Su, whose sincere invitation was met with a positive response from the final jury members, Da Peng and Liu Haoran. During the roadshow's feedback session, the judges expressed their admiration for the project. Da Peng decided on the spot to provide funding for the post-production of Tashi. Liu Haoran also expressed his willingness to offer support. Both judges reached out to the production team after the roadshow to finalize the support, helping the film on earlier.
Tashi began production in 2023 in Nangqian, Qinghai. The screenplay is adapted from short stories Missing a Dog Called Tashi and Roudan's Brother Called Luoluo by the writer Chi Sanghua. The film tells the story of a young boy named Tashi who rescues a stray dog. After the dog is adopted, it is also named "Tashi," which makes young Tashi the subject of ridicule among his classmates. In an attempt to end the embarrassment, Tashi plans to kill the dog, but in a twist of fate, he accidentally blinds it. Consumed by guilt, Tashi suffers from an eye condition for years. However, after becoming a famous writer and returning to his hometown, he uncovers the true story behind the events.
