During the Spring Festival period of 2023, more than 100 million went to the cinema, hitting the second highest gross box office ever. On top of it, in February after the Spring Festival period, the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Where the Wind Blows, A Guilty Conscience and English Vinglish were announced to be released, offering more diversified viewing choices for moviegoers. Meanwhile, 15 Chinese films were shortlisted in sections of the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. In particular, The Shadowless Tower, directed by Zhang Lv, and animation Art College 1994 were shortlisted in the Competition section, significantly boosting the morale of Chinese filmmakers. That’s what the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) Market Screenings is for—a transaction platform for Chinese and foreign film industries. The 13th BJIFF Market Screenings will continue to open to films with commercial and artistic values in need of assistance, serve as the bridge linking domestic and international film industry chains, and promote prosperity of China’s film industry.

Since its launch in 2020, we have selected 30 outstanding films in various genres, such as suspense, drama, fantasy, romance, history and youth, and have assisted in addressing multi-dimensional needs of each film in terms of access to industry financing, post-production, promotion and distribution, copyright sales and other aspects. Especially, the River of Salvation and Fast and Feel Love have reached cooperation in domestic/international distribution.

“Undoubtedly, such inside screenings deliver positive promotional effects, and make films visible to suitable distribution companies. By means of various opportunities and channels, we can also actively seek cooperation with theatres or streaming platforms”, as representatives from production companies present indicated to us.

Following the principle of high quality, this edition of Market Screenings prioritizes discovery of outstanding films. Therefore, entries must go through selection of the Organizing Committee before they can be included in the screenings for industry insiders. To apply for the Market Screenings, entries must meet the following requirements:

1. Initial production must be completed after June 2021 and a complete film can be provided.

2. The runtime must be over 60 minutes.

3. Clear-cut copyright with authorization of the copyright owner to participate in the Market Screenings.

4. Films in need of copyright sales, financing post production, promotion and distribution.

5. Films shortlisted for award selection sections of the BJIFF (such as the competition section, Forward Future Section, WIPs for the Project Pitches) will be given priority for screening.

6. In principle, films that have successfully participated in previous Market Screenings shall not participate again.

The deadline for online application is March 10, 2023. The Market Screenings will be held from April 25 to 27, 2023 at Langyuan Station, Chaoyang District.
