“Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, Something Special for You”
"Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, there’s something special that can only be found from the cinema." On the evening of April 21, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains was screened at the Outdoor Cinema, along with the world premiere of As Spring Comes Along, thematic short film of the 14th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), where director Gu Xiaogang was present at the site of post-screening. Kees Van Oostrum, member of the Jury of Forward Future section and Dutch cinematographer, enjoyed the whole film and the post-screening activity as an ordinary audience.
Landscape is the theme and key to understanding Gu Xiaogang’s films. "Landscape is just like the faith for the Chinese people... A lot of friends of mine ask me to make a costume film, but instead I prefer the modern society. I want to find our own cultural context." On how to deal with the relationship between the real life and virtuality in paintings and films, director Gu said that it is necessary to first establish the text first, guide the audience to experience reality and virtuality. Then, it is necessary to pay attention to audiovisual expression and "look for wormholes in the two art-related disciplines".
Director Gu mentioned that he will keep exploring in the future, and that he may make an attempt at romance in his third volume, "We're looking forward to it." He also revealed that, if we go deeper in As Spring Comes Along, we find that it has already given a very specific answer to the audio-visual approach of the next work of his.
