Tan Zhuo and Her “new Movement”: Strength from Struggle
By Tan Zhuo, 13th BJIFF Artistic Innovation Promotion Ambassador and Initiator of Artistic Innovation Section.
“new Movement" is the English name for the Artistic Innovation Section. The team was very excited about the name, thought it quite cool and felt power from it -- the determination the youngsters must do something. It’s always difficult to do something new since there is no prior experience for reference. However, if we were deterred by the difficulties only existing in our minds, the world would perhaps never have any possibilities. Therefore, the lowercase "n" at the beginning of the word "new" represents our ongoing growth, and it also reminds us to always maintain a humble attitude of learning on the way of making progress. The logo is designed as two intersecting diagonal crosses of "WM," which represents both a type of reliance and a desire of breaking restrictions. I believe that is where the "new" comes from.

The first section to be presented in this section is the Master’s Image Display. For this purpose, I invited Dr. Shen Qilan, the curator, who planned the exhibition entitled The Poetics of Fantasy. We invited seven top artists in the world with their 16 pieces of images. We are eager to display a heavyweight first-class exhibition in the world to the audience. Since I am looking for and experiencing such a kind of boundary -- if the carrier of both films and contemporary art are images, can we treat them equally from a certain perspective? When the contemporary visual art is placed within the context of films, I hope we can be inspired on how to see the world from multidimensional perspectives and how to present our content through diverse ways. The Image Display will be open to the public for free from April 20 to May 15 at the UCCA LAB at UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in 798 Art District, Beijing and we are expecting to have more exchanges.

The “new Movement Dialogue” is the second block of the section. It was named "Master’s Dialogue” because we hoped to absorb more essence from the masters and apply it in the practice. However, when the section was determined, I have been repeatedly pondering and thought that the purpose of this section was to make judgments rather than express opinions. We should obtain a type of driving force from richer and more diverse exchanges and collisions -- sincere discussions, critiques and development. As a result, we have a lineup of distinguished guests this year: scholar, artist, creator, actor, director, producer... The dialogue will last for three days from April 23 to April 25 in the manner both live streaming and offline with audiences. We hope to break through the restriction of time and space so that more people can take part.

  Some Panelists for new Movement
We are pressed for time this year, but we have managed to implement a project within one month that would typically cost at least one or three years, and we are still amazed by what we have achieved. The other three sectors -- "Art Supermarket", "New Art Talent Program" and "Film Art Collections" -- which cannot be implemented in time will be presented next year in a more complete manner.
Facing various obstacles and challenges, we should undoubtedly extend special appreciations to our colleagues, partners and friends who have spared no efforts for the Artistic Innovation Section. Thank you all for the precious support! We also hope that every audience of the BJIFF Artistic Innovation Section will act as a participant instead of a stander-by. We’re looking forward to building a new Movement together with you all!
