Boundless Light, Future Sight: The 15th BJIFF “Boundless ∞ Immersive Section” Is About to Begin
From the Lumière brothers' The Arrival of a Train to the holographic immersion of virtual reality, cinema has always served as a “cinematic wormhole” breaking the constraints of time and space. The Boundless ∞ Immersive Section of the 15th Beijing International Film Festival charts a galaxy of cinema, weaving together technology and art to explore infinite narrative possibilities. Here, the moving image becomes a launchpad toward a world where the virtual and the real converge - audiences are not just witnesses to stories, but co-creators of them. Through the interplay of cutting-edge technologies, cinema breaks free from physical limitations and guides us, pixel by pixel, beam by beam, into realms yet unseen.
This year's Boundless ∞ Immersive Section builds on BJIFF's XR legacy with expanded curatorial vision, enhanced exhibition spaces, and a wider range of presentation formats. Featuring over 40 works across a diverse range of media - including VR, MR, AR, Panoramic Screen, Three-sided Projection, and interactive installations - the section uses technology as its brush and audience experience as its ink to redraw the boundaries of cinema.

Two Curated Sections, One Immersive Reimagining
The first section, Boundless Theater, will present 14 works from 10 countries, spanning 360° films, single-user interactive pieces, and spatial works. The 360° lineup is organized into three thematic strands: “Shifting Perspectives”, “Walking Through Time”, and “Becoming Human”. Highlights include: Kinoscope - A VR Journey Into the World of Cinema, a tribute to 130 years of film history. Notes on Blindness, honoring one of VR's landmark works. These works employ animation, live action, and other mediums to showcase the enduring allure of virtual cinema. The single-user interactive track features several innovative and thought-provoking experiences that reflect the evolution of VR storytelling, including Eye-tracking interaction, volumetric video capture and convergence of film and gaming. Key titles include: Ito Meikyū (2024 Venice Immersive Grand Prize), which explores the imaginative potential of VR through the abstraction of line. Impulse: Playing With Reality (2024 Venice Immersive Achievement Prize), a mixed-reality experience that blurs the boundaries between cinema, gaming, and theater through rich, multilayered interaction. Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom, an all-new chapter in the beloved Gundam universe, bringing fans into a virtual–real fusion of time and space. This year's spatial works include Gargoyle Doyle, the first MR (Mixed Reality) narrative experience of the spatial computing era, along with a large-scale, multi-user VR installation enhanced by sound-based interaction. These experiences allow participants to freely navigate expansive real-world environments as they step directly into the heart of the story.

The second section, Immersive Space · Boundless Images, features over 30 works by both established artists and emerging creators from universities across China. The program is divided into three thematic clusters: “Drifting through the Nebula”, “Superstring Narratives”, and “Archaeology of the Singularity”. “Drifting through the Nebula” includes works such as AI-IF, Theater of Emotions, and Arkana of Phantom Numbers, all of which explore the expansion and convergence of cinema as it evolves alongside technological innovation - wandering through film history while venturing toward its cross-disciplinary future. Z’ Superstring Narratives" features titles like Phantom Dimension and White Dew, presenting bold experiments in future-forward storytelling through Panoramic Screen and Three-sided Projection, reimagining the cinematic language itself. “Archaeology of the Singularity” showcases standout works such as Tuengle and 90 Minutes Cosmology, inviting audiences to reflect on today's media landscape from a speculative and forward-looking perspective. These pieces critically examine the interplay between technology and our time, sparking deep contemplation about world-building in the post-AI era. A Special Experience Zone will also be available, featuring large-scale VR installations for immersive walk-in exploration. In addition, this section introduces a special program titled “Tribute to 120 Years of Chinese Cinema: University Showcase”, inviting outstanding student works from film, animation, and media-related departments across the country to screen in panoramic and three-sided formats. The program offers a vibrant display of how the next generation of creators is honoring - and reimagining - cinema through the lens of new media, animation, and AIGC technologies.

The program also features Panoramic Screen, Three-sided Projection, and Immersive Interactive Installations that foreground sensory transformation in deep immersion. These works harness technology not simply to dazzle, but to shift the audience's role - from passive observers to active dreamers and co-creators.

Built on technological innovation, this Boundless∞Immersive Section remains rooted in an enduring dialogue with cinema and the arts. This vibrant constellation of works invites audiences to once again encounter art and beauty as deeply human experiences.
