Ina repressed, deeply religious community in the north of Scotland, a naive young woman named Bess falls in love with Danish oil-rig worker Jan. However, Jan is seriously injured in an accident aboard the rig and ends up paralyzed. To give him a reason for living, Bess starts seeing other men, and surprisingly, his condition begins to improve.
