The Ming Dynasty. Mei Jun, the governor of Yingzhou, conspires with his concubine Xu to eliminate his first wife, Hu, by manipulating fortune-teller Zhao Banxian. The maid Shouchun helps Hu escape to the capital with the Mirror of Fortune. On the road, Hu gives birth but is abducted by a bandit known as Jinyanbao, driving her to madness over the loss of her child. Her son is picked up and raised by Lin He-, the governor of Daizhou. Seventeen years later, Lin is reassigned to the capital as the local magistrate. He displays the drawings of the mirror to search for his foster son's mother. Hu and her maid come to claim the Mirror of Fortune alongside Mei and Xu. In court, Lin learns the entire story, punishes Xu and Zhao, and makes his foster son reunite with his family.
