Western Xia invades the Song Dynasty. The court holds a competition to select a military commander. Yang Wenguang wins the title after defeating Wang Lun. Following Kou Zhun's recommendation, the Song emperor asks Mu Guiying to lead the troops. Despite being over fifty and feeling abandoned by the court, she decides to accept the role after being persuaded by She Saihua, also known as She Taijun. Mu enforces strict military discipline and sets out to defend her country.
