In 2022, Beijing International Sports Film Week debuted as an event of the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF). In 2023, the 19th Beijing International Sports Film Week, themed "Double Olympic Dreams in Images", is hosted by the BJIFF Organizing Committee, the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) and the Beijing Olympic City Development Association (BODA). As an important Olympic legacy brand project, the film week will spread the Olympic spirit, enhance cultural exchange between China and the world and help to build a great power of sports through the influence of sports films and TV programs.
The Beijing International Sports Film Week this year will continue to carry out relevant events centered on sporting works and create multiple new contents.
From 1:30PM to 3:30PM, April 26, at O-Box, Langyuan Station, the famous director and screenwriter, Mr. Yu Baimei, will attend the Workshop & Masterclass as the keynote speaker at the film week this year. Ping Pong: The Triumph, written by Yu Baimei and co-directed by Deng Chao and Yu Baimei, has attracted the wide attention before and after its screening this year. The film tells the story of Chinese men's table tennis which suffered from setbacks in the early 1990s. The coach working overseas volunteered to come back to lead the recruits and veterans for a counterattack. Many of the characters in the film have their prototypes in reality. The plot and emotional arrangement of the film are also very realistic, so the audience regard the film as the most brilliant collaboration between Deng Chao and Yu Baimei.
The Workshop & Masterclass will start from this film. Mr. Yu Baimei will talk about his passion for sports and the methodology of creating sports-themed films, including but not limited to the following topics —
# Difficulty of shooting sports-themed films and television works
# Screenwriting methodology for sports-themed works
# Exploration and practice of shooting sports-themed works
# How to explore sports themes
# Sportsmanship in sports films and society
In addition, you will also hear the wonderful stories behind the screens on the site:
— More than 800,000 words of surveys and interviews in the early creation;
— Run half naked in the snowstorm in Beijing after the first day of shooting;
— Draw and integrate 8 emotional lines to shoot a film with a group of characters
— Why is the performance so realistic? The actors really fall in love with the game and compete with each other even after the shooting;
— The biggest challenge and difficulty: always consider how to make the sports-themed film into an action film and turn the unpopular sports into a public entertainment;
— The process of film shooting is the best way to practice the sportsmanship featured with unity, cooperation and fearlessness!

  Yu Baimei, Workshop & Masterclass Guest of the 19th Beijing International Sports Film Week
From 1:30PM to 3:30PM, April 27, at Orange Space Media, Langyuan Station, Mr. Yu Baimei will also meet with Ms. Chen Lu, China's first figure skating world champion; Mr. Ou Chuliang, former goalkeeper and coach of national football team, current lecturer of Asian Football Confederation; Mr. Guo Yuanqiu, director of board and general manager of Ogilvy Beijing; Mr. Ye Dawei, secretary general of Yao Foundation; Mr. Tao Yejian, founder of Eagle Media & presenter of Magic Seven and a mysterious heavyweight guest to participate in the Theme Forum: How to Tell Chinese Stories with Sports-Themed Films, with the purpose of exploring the relationship between sports-themed films and Chinese stories.
The forum will discuss how sports images present Chinese culture, tradition and spirit:
For the creators, why do they choose sports as an entry to present Chinese culture and the image of China to the world?
From what aspects do they hope to explore the level and perspective of sports themes?
What kind of Chinese stories and emotional resonance do the audience hope to find in these films?
How can Chinese films such as Leap and Ping Pong: The Triumph expand the international reputation and show the charm of Chinese films and sports to the world?
What does sports and sportsmanship look like in the eyes of professional sports players and coaches?
What other sports stories are worthy of being excavated, developed and adapted into films and TV dramas in the future so as to continue Chinese discourse?
Since the COVID-19 pandemic situation has been gradually improved now, the public enthusiasm for various offline sports has been ignited once again. The creation of sports-themed films has also been greatly promoted. Apart from praising the physical strength, perseverance and sportsmanship, the creation of sports-themed films has always been integrated with a broader national discourse and become an important channel for telling Chinese stories and showing the image of China to the world.
By sharing the special column of sports-themed films, we may better reflect on the past, the present and the future of the sports-themed film creation, and provide more inspirations and suggestions for the creative practices in the future.
