The Jury of the 14th BJIFF Tiantan Award has announced the participation of David White, an Australian film sound designer.
For fourteen years, the jury of the BJIFF Tiantan Award has been upholding a professional and diversified attitude to invite masters from different fields of the industry to join hands and inject professional and international perspectives into the Tiantan Award, so as to deliver satisfactory results to all the film fans.
As a sound designer, David White has had a significant impact in Hollywood and around the world. He has worked as a sound designer and sound mimic on television series, documentaries, and feature films since 1983. With his outstanding business ability and professionalism, White has participated in the production of more than a hundred films and TV dramas, many of which are very familiar to the audience, such as Mad Max: Fury Road.
White has a unique perspective on how sound can enhance a film’s narrative and boost the audience's sense of immersion. In Mad Max: Fury Road, the soundscapes he meticulously constructed complement the visual images of the desert post-apocalyptic world. From the sound of whizzing car engines to tense chases and conversations between characters, White's sound design reinforces the narrative depth and emotional intensity of the film.
His attention to details and mastery of sound levels made every explosion and every puff of sand in the film very immersive for the audience. The film not only earned him great honors in the industry, but also pushed the combination of cinematic sound and shadow to a new level. In 2016, White won the 88th Academy Award for Best Sound due to his aural feast.
In addition, Farscape, the drama series he participated in, won the Best Achievement in Sound granted by the Australian Screen Sound Guild, and LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace, in which he worked as a sound editor, was nominated for the Best Sound Award granted by Motion Picture Sound Editors. With brilliant creativity, White proved the indispensability of sound design in the art of cinema and its massive power in creating compelling screen worlds. He continuously explores new possibilities in sound design, blends the latest technology with creativity to greatly promote the development of the art of cinematic sound.
Of course, White also has an unbreakable relationship with China and Chinese films. Not only has Mad Max: Fury Road been screened at the BJIFF and the China Film Archive many times, but he himself has repeatedly expressed his yearning and love for this oriental land and the artworks.
To a certain extent, White is invited as a jury member of Tiantan Award this time, which is not only a professional visit, but also a reunion after a long time. Please stay tuned for more exciting news from this year's BJIFF, and the Jury of Tiantan Award, comprised of seven outstanding filmmakers in their respective fields, will surely bring new surprises to the audience.
