No Boundary to Creation - Films Grow with Imagines
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu once said, "Making a film is like a piece of cake, making a good film is like a war, and making a very good movie is like a miracle.” The creation of a film can be a thousand reversals, or a moment of inspiration. However, the most exciting moment for countless filmmakers is not the moment when the film is finished, but the moment when the film faces the audience.
To help film creators know the creation trend to know and appeal to the audience, the 14th BJIFF Creation Forum: The Excellence and Diversity of Film Creation will be held in the afternoon of April 21 at Langyuan Station. Co-hosted by the BJIFF Organizing Committee and China Film Archive (China Film Art Research Center), the forum has invited film creators at home and abroad to speak out freely, and reveal their own creation keys in the exchange of views.
▌Satisfy the audience and innovate experimentally
Is the creation to satisfy the audience or to innovate experimentally? Panelists invited to this forum, including Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski, director Andrew Lau from Hong Kong, China, Yu Zhou, President of Light Chaser Animation, and screenwriter Chen Yu will talk about how they take the audience’s feeling into consideration when creating.
Co-writing Roman Polanski's film Knife in the Water to participating in the "superhero movie" Avengers to directing the drama EO, and winning the Jury’s Special Grand Prix at the 75th Festival de Cannes, Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski will tell us how the world of film has changed in 60 years based on his creative experience of multiple film identities.
As a very adventurous director, Andrew Lau can make a classic each time when creating a film, such as the Infernal Affairs series, Young and Dangerous series, and The Captain. However, innovation is accompanied by risk, and he will share what is the premise of experimental innovation. After Martin Scorsese won four Oscar awards for his work of The Departed remade from Infernal Affairs, what would he talk about with Andrew Lau when they met again?
The 48 poems run through Chang An, and it can be imagined that the biggest challenge in the production process is to present the artistic conception of Tang poetry. It was proved to be very successful, and the audience highly rated these clips, such as A Song of the Yan Country and Invitation To Wine. It is said that it took a year or two to make these clips, and recalling that difficult time, Yu Zhou, the film's producer, has something to say.
At a time when suspense stories have become a popular genre in the market, how does Chen Yu, the screenwriter, jump out of the existing creative paradigm structure, find innovative points that can arouse the interest of the audience, and find a differentiated market direction? However, breaking the mindset and pushing the boundaries of genre also means facing a lot of challenges. His ideas are expecting.
▌Local stories and global audience
The secret of reaching the "last mile" of the audience is that the film does not adopt the usual "tricks" to add form to the image, but conveys sincere emotions through local stories. Through the summary of the creation experience of domestic and foreign masterpieces, the local stories can be promoted to the world, and the international influence and communication power of the film can be enhanced.
